Disturbed Concert Set Design
I designed a stage designs for the Metal band “Disturbed”, one of my personal favorites.
I imagined this would be a big production like a farewell concert in an outside concert venue.
I began to think of a narrative that could flow through the show within two sets and a rotating stage. What I came up with was a show themed around the idea of transformation and change
for the better. Many of their songs hold a political and social essence to them that cries out for the betterment of the self and humanity and I wanted
to explore that with a sort of before and after
with the stages.
Part 1: This would be the first part of the show, showing “the guy” trapped in a stagnant position confined to fences, brick, and barbed wire in a city that references a big capitalist city in a previous music video. He is grappling with himself as he slowly begins to awaken, seeing the poor condition the world is in. All the while, large demon hands (a combination of a demon motif in their music and monsters in my artwork) loom over the band, very present and embedded into the stage. The colors of the lighting is inspired by an earlier album of theirs, Indestructible.
Part 2: In the second half of the show, the stage would turn around, showing how “the guy” has broken free of his confines, taking his chain back into his own hands, beckoning the crowd to do the same and change their lives/world for the better. The fence wall has been destroyed and the demon hands have changed into human hands surrounded by angel wings. They are both stained red, showing how even if we do change, we can’t completely forget the past and who we are/were. The colors of the lighting are inspired by a later album album of theirs, Evolution.
