DRENCHED BOOK COVER/BACK

This Illustration serves as a foldable cover and back for the story of a manuscript I wrote for my Fiction Writing class here at Pratt. Ines is no ordinary detective, a psychic medium with a deep connection to the dead, she uses her gifts to uncover the truths others can't see, truths that often linger on the other side. When children in her neighborhood begin to vanish without a trace, whispers of an old legend return: la Llorona. But this is no resurrection of a singular ghost what Ines discovers is far more chilling. It is a new incarnation, born from grief, rage, and loss. This is no ordinary haunting; it's a story soaked in loss, and it runs deep. Drenched.

The illustration features Inés submerged in murky water—her head just above the surface, one hand lifted in a listening gesture; it represents the uncertainty and supernatural chaos she’s wading through, both literally and figuratively. She’s deep in it, almost consumed by it—but not overwhelmed. Her hand motion, mimicking the act of listening, is a direct nod to her supernatural ability to hear things others can’t—voices, presences, truths hidden beneath the surface. The ripples surrounding her were also intentional, doubling as metaphors for both water and sound. Just as water ripples outward from a disturbance, so does sound, and Inés is often the only one attuned to those disturbances.

Visually, I leaned into grungy, sickly green tones, evoking river water and decay—an unnatural palette meant to create discomfort and tension. In contrast, Inés’s red Gothic makeup and jewelry boldly stand out, signaling her refusal to blend into her environment or be defined by it.
